Where the text comes from
The story is older and stranger than most people expect. The words are a corrupted passage from Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. Letters were dropped, added and shuffled until the Latin became nonsense, which is why scholars long assumed it was random gibberish. In the 1980s a Latin teacher named Richard McClintock traced it back to Cicero after noticing the genuine, rare word "consectetur" buried inside the sample.
