Pixels or percentage: two ways to say the same thing

Resizing by pixels means you type exact target numbers, such as 1080 by 1080. Use this when a platform or template demands a specific size and you want to hit it precisely. Resizing by percentage scales relative to the original, so 50 percent halves both width and height and 200 percent doubles them. Percentage is faster when you just want something proportionally smaller or larger and do not care about the exact final numbers. Both methods produce the same kind of output; they are simply different ways of describing the destination. If you know the destination width in pixels, type pixels. If you only know you want it roughly half as big, use percentage.

Keep the aspect ratio so nothing stretches

Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. A 4000 by 3000 photo has a 4:3 ratio; squash it into a square and faces widen, circles turn into ovals, and the whole frame looks wrong. The fix is to lock the aspect ratio so that changing one dimension automatically adjusts the other. With the lock on, set the width to 1200 and the height follows to whatever preserves the proportions. Unlock it only when you deliberately want to change the shape, and expect distortion when you do. If you need a different shape without stretching, crop first and resize afterward, rather than forcing the resizer to warp the pixels.

Upscaling versus downscaling, and what happens to quality

Downscaling, making an image smaller, is the safe direction. The tool discards pixels the smaller size does not need, and the result stays crisp because all the original detail is still present, just condensed. Upscaling, making an image larger than its source resolution, is the risky direction. There is no extra detail to draw on, so the tool has to invent new pixels by interpolating between existing ones. The image gets bigger but not sharper, and pushing far past the original size produces soft, mushy edges. A practical rule: if you can, start from a source larger than your target and scale down. When you must enlarge, keep the factor modest, well under 200 percent, and accept that some softness is unavoidable. A 600 pixel photo blown up to 2000 pixels will never look as clean as one shot at 2000 to begin with.

Common target sizes worth memorizing

Most resizing tasks land on a handful of familiar dimensions. For social media, square posts are typically 1080 by 1080 pixels, vertical stories and short-video frames are 1080 by 1920, and a landscape link preview is often 1200 by 630. Profile pictures are usually square and small on screen, so anything from 400 by 400 up to 1080 by 1080 is plenty; going larger just wastes bytes. For websites, hero and banner images commonly sit between 1600 and 1920 pixels wide, while inline content images rarely need more than 800 to 1200 pixels. A good habit borrowed from designers is to export at the recommended size or a touch above, then let the platform downscale, since platforms shrink gracefully but enlarge poorly.

Once an image is the right dimensions, it is often still heavier than it needs to be. Resizing changes pixel count; it does not optimize the file format or compression.
