How browser permission and the live meter work

If the level barely moves, your input is too low, and on a call you will sound faint or get cut off by noise gates. If the meter is constantly slammed against the top, you are clipping, and clipped audio sounds harsh and crackly with no way to repair it afterward. Aim for peaks that reach the upper region only on your loudest words, with everyday speech sitting a comfortable distance below the ceiling.

Common fixes when the meter stays flat

If the test shows nothing, the cause is almost always one of a handful of everyday issues rather than a broken mic. Work through them in order:

  • Permission: Make sure you clicked Allow. Check the address-bar icon and reset the site permission if you blocked it earlier.
  • Wrong input device: Laptops often default to a built-in mic when you meant to use a USB or headset mic, or the other way around. Open your operating system sound settings and pick the correct input device, then reload.
  • A physical mute switch: Many headsets and USB mics have a hardware mute button on the body or the inline cable. It is easy to leave it on. The same goes for a software mute in your OS mixer.
  • Another app is using it: Zoom, Discord, OBS, or a teleconferencing app can hold exclusive access to the mic. Close other audio apps and try again.
  • Level too low: If the meter moves only a little, raise the input volume in your sound settings and enable a microphone boost if your device offers one. Nudge it up gradually so you do not introduce hiss or clipping.
  • Connection and drivers: Confirm a 3.5mm mic is in the correct jack and a USB mic is firmly seated. A reboot or a driver update clears up the stubborn cases.
